On
July 7 and 8, 2001, South Brunswick Girl Scout troop, 1782,
and Friends of the Slack House Volunteers, painted the Slack-Carroll
House, an Italianate home built around the time of the Civil
War as the first physician's office in Dayton. The WAWA
corporation donated the Slack-Carroll House to the Dayton
Village Citizens' Coalition.
The
Girl Scouts organized donations for the painting event, sending
out many letters requesting donated paint for the project.
The youngsters who are earning a merit badge through this
community service include: Ann Alexandrowicz, Kristen Alpaugh,
Carly Laniado, Kathie Nelson, Danielle Weisgerber. Their
Troop leaders were Diane Nelson and Barbara Laniado.
Thanks to the efforts of the Girl Scouts, the National Paint Industries of North Brunswick, donated all the paint and painting supplies to both prime and paint the house. National Paint Industries produces paint for larger contractors, agencies and institutions. The President of National Paint not only provided paint and supplies, but also gave lessons to the volunteers on how best to paint a historic house. The Girl Scouts worked very hard in painting. Adults painted the second floor and did the paint preparation.
Other businesses that contributed, included Cranbury Paint and Hardware, food was provided by Pierre's and Capriccio Pizza, Dayton Express Diner (now La Taverna), Chicken Holiday, and WAWA; Von Thuns donated annuals. Crossroads Nursery donated a plum tree for us to plant in memory of the victims of 9-11.
Since that first important exterior paint job, the Boy Scouts of Troop 888 raised funds to have a professional painter repaint the house in 2006. The house looks terrific because of all the scouts' efforts. Boy Scout Troop 888 has rebuilt two porches on the house, repainted and refinished floors inside as well as added gardens.
