A PAINTING PARTY THAT STARTED IT ALL!!

On July 7th an 8th, 2001, the members of DVCC, the Kingston Greenways, Kingston Historical Society, Troop 1782, NJ 14 Regiment, Company K and the Mayor, all helped to prime the Slack-Carroll house.  To prepare the surface for paint, we pulled  thousands of nails and filled them.  The nails resulted from WAWA having their contractors remove siding that had covered the original cedar siding. Other corporations helped through donations of paint, equipment, and other materials. The business which helped are listed on previous pages.

The Dayton Coalition refurbished the outside of the house and has begun to plant a friendship garden reflecting Civil War and Post Civil War Era plantings.  Inside, after working with architects and historians we hope in the future to create exhibits reflecting period medicine, exhibits about the Civil War, such as the history of the underground railroad in Central Jersey and information on South Brunswick residents that served in the Civil War.

The offices of the DVCC and the SB Garden Club are to be located at the Slack-Carroll House, and our mailing address is P.O. Box 285, Dayton, NJ 08810. A special thanks for the donations of a computer from Kingston Greenways and another from an anoymous donor. One computer will be dedicated to our GIS (Geographic Information Systems) digital mapping of walkways, sidewalks, historical sites in the Township, our parks and greenways. Thanks also to ESRI (a California digital mapping software company) for the software. The software also permits better understanding of our community and planning.

In order to expand a parking at their store, Wawa had acquired the historic site and anticipated its demolition, generating strong opposition from Dayton residents. After months of discussion, Wawa agreed to transfer the house and land to the Coalition. The South Brunswick Planning Board passed a resolution to recognize the transfer of the property and approved their parking lot expansion.

Ann paints the railing.

Girls Scouts wait for other members to join the painting party.
