Overview of a December tour

The Philadelphia Flower Show

Our tour to the Philadelphia Flower Show in March remains a highpoint in our Gardening year. It is considered one of the world's premier flower shows. And it is the largest indoor flowershow. It is held in the extensive Pennsylvania Convention Center in center city at 13th and Cherry Street.

Plan a couple of trips to the flower show to see all the exhibits because there are really too many to see in one day. Visit their website for more information (click on their name to go to their website). In 2007 PHS celebrated the 178th anniversary of the Philadelphia Flower Show. The show theme was "Legends of Ireland'', which celebrated the most accomplished florists, landscapers and horticulturists at this spring extravaganza.
"Bella Italia" was another popular show. Each show is more delightful than the last.

Star studded culinary demonstrations, an internationally renowned lecture series, and an elegant afternoon tea complete this world-class exposition celebrates years of floral magnificence. It is the largest indoor flower show in the world!!

Before you go, check the schedule for the free lectures and demonstrations. Last year, we visited the lecture on roses, which was very informative. In 2007 we attended lectures on soil and orchids, among others. Last year we learned more about African violets, daylilies, and pruning.

Let's plan to go again each year! Just email us if you'd like to join us on the first Monday of the show!

This Summer date TBA, to tour perennials in bloom.

We're also working on planting design and appropriate Colonial plants for Wetherill, our local Colonial historic house.

Tour Bartram's Garden in Philadelphia with us--we're planning another trip there!
This Colonial garden and home give context to John and his son William's plant collecting and seed business. They collected plants and seeds from the Great Lakes to Florida--and in the mid-1700s to the early 1800s. We visited and toured the gardens September 18th. One goal is to research possible links between Bartram and Wetherill. The latter was reported to have a nursery from which specimens were collected.
