The Dayton Village Citizens Coalition is a non-profit, organized in 2000 to help preserve our local history, help with traditional landscapes and plants, and bring people together. In 2001, the Slack-Carroll house and office was donated to our group and we have endeavored to save this historic house and to turn the office into a museum about country doctors.

As a part of our mission, we strive to put together exhibits and information about health problems which plagued past generations. Often these are problems of which we are not aware because those who went before set up systems and found solutions that benefit us today. That is the case with Mosquito Control. New Jersey led the nation in developing laws, mosquito control techniques, research on mosquitoes, and organizational structures to address this serious problem. That was the impetus behind our desire to have students explore this little known, but very important contribution that New Jersey made to our Nation.

Sceeters is an acronym which stands for Social Science Curriculum, Environmental Education, Teacher Educational Resources. Of course, skeeters is what mosquitoes are commonly called and were called.

Other activities our group has undertaken have included:

Research information about the history of our area.

Learn about Victorian gardens and plant flowers to beautify the spaces we share, particularly at the five corners in Dayton. Share our information about heritage gardens through seminars, tours, and publications.

Design Colonial herb gardens at historic Wetherill and Victorian garden rooms at the Slack-Carroll house.

Organize environmental cleanups and inform businesses and the public about the importance of reducing litter.

Restore the Slack-Carroll house at 354 Georges Road, which WAWA donated to the Coalition in March of 2001. This includes carrying out research on the inhabitants and the era, and preparing information about that period.

Create Civil War Era and post-Civil War Era medical exhibits in the Slack-Carroll house, as well as exhibits highlighting everyday Victorian life-style.

Build a Victorian memory and friendship garden at the Slack-Carroll House.

Expand our Garden Club and our knowledge about appropriate plants. Share gardening knowledge with our community.

The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission funded our efforts to bring this webquest curriculum to students. There support made this possible. Below are the contact names, departmental contact, and their mission statement.
