News and Social Pages Reporters Task

The Post-Tribune editor, Pete Peterson, called a team of crack reporters together. He has assigned them to investigate the problem and to write a series of articles on the problem, solutions, and the actions Government and people can take to eradicate the problem.

At the meeting with news staff, Pete Peterson, noted that during the 1940s, malaria cases, once thought to be a disease no longer a problem, had increased dramatically. Now cases exceeded 1200 and seemed to be rising. The community was highly concerned, the Mosquito Control Commissions were active, and the public health community alarmed at the rise. Pete wanted to inform the residents about the disease. It was known to be carried by an infected mosquito, but what kind? Where did it live? Who was in charge of getting rid of mosquitoes; how were they going to reduce the number of mosquitoes, and what was the impact on public health?

Each team was asked to answer the main question about malaria and mosquitoes, and then to focus on questions specifically designed for their team.

The main question for all teams to answer, provides the background needed to understand some of the problem.

Task for All Reporters (at least for background)

What is the nature of the problem of Malaria in 1944-1945 in New Jersey?

What are the possible sources of exposure and what vectors spread the disease?

Do mosquitoes carry other diseases?

Some hints-- one will need to describe how one gets malaria, describe the disease, how many people have the disease, and how many have died. Also disclose where is malaria found in the world. What do people think on how the people got malaria. What treatment is available if you get malaria?

Depending on your team, you have specific questions to answer. Read below.

Question Specific to News and Social Reporters

What is the route of transmission for Malaria? Which mosquitoes spread malaria? Where are they found? What other diseases do mosquitoes carry?

4. Who are the people and organizations that plan to control mosquitoes?

What are their credentials and background?

Who are they?

What is the history of mosquito control?

Your task is to find out who are the major players in this county in preventing the spread of Malaria and write about them.

Hints:

As mosquitoes are the vector for spreading Malaria, you find that the key player in Middlesex County is Thomas Headlee of Dayton, New Jersey. Also, John B. Smith is a key player.

What organization(s) work to prevent the spread of disease through eradicating mosquitoes (hint: the NJ Mosquito Control Commissions; the Mosquito Control Association,)

Your first assignment is to find out who Dr. Headlee is, where he lives, what role he has in the state and in the County, what contributions he has made to the field of mosquito control. You may find that you may need to write a series of articles--or that some of your research can be shared with other members of your team, especially the reporters working on the mosquito control technique assignment. Then profile Dr. Headlee as part of your article.
