Bike Paths and Walking Trails
The Dayton Village Citizens' Coalition has been working on identifying potential bike paths, areas in need of sidewalks, and ways to reduce traffic noise and speed within Dayton and South Brunswick. Our hope is that our children can ride their bikes without risking their lives. In addition, we are recording the flora and fauna of each area, and also the location of the paths.
This path running from Monmouth Junction to Route 1 is owned by the Township.

One potential bike path is along land owned by the Township. One such path area is the old dismantled rail road and underground sewer line. This path runs with little interuption between Monmouth Junction and Route One. If there was a pedestrian overpass over Route One, the path would continue to the Canal in Kingston. With some work the Monmouth Junction end could be connected to the new Route 522, where a bike path had been included on the South Brunswick master plan.

Another potential bike path is along the old trolley line, that runs north to south through the Township.See the history page for more information on the Old Trolley line paths. Many paths are historic: either old trolley or rail beds, which were remnants of our transportation history.

In addition, throughout the Township there are patches of bike paths and walkways added by developers as a cost of doing business (and one hopes for the value added to the development effort). However, many of the bike paths to not link, making travel impossible or difficult for youngsters to get from one place to another safely. Many parents are obliged to take their children by car only a few blocks away because there are no safe passages for bikes (resulting in much less healthy life styles for kids not to mention restricting freedom of movement). One example of a bikeway that would enhance the Township is to ensure that there are bikeways along the new Route 522. There are bikeways from Route 27 to Route 1 (along Promenade) and from Georges Road to Route 130 (along 522). If these can be linked, there would be an East to West bike corridor.
